Memorial Day - occasion to remember Polish suffering in WWII

The Oral History Project.

I would like to help by making sure our community is more aware of the project. We can do this by discussing what else can be done to help find more survivors for interviews.

A great way would be to put together an update on the project and make sure it is widely published, not only in the Polish American community. The 2000 Census lists that about 600 000 California residents marked Polish ancestry. Great number of them are here in the Bay Area. Estimates, depending on the formula used, can vary from 100 000 to 150000. Most of those persons are outside active Polish American community. I am sure among them there are people who could be interviewed for the project.

In such update it would be useful to have names of those already interviewed. This could make others to come forward. Many times people do not want to relive the horrors and would opt to stay silent. Such update could explain the importance of their testimony. I know such person in San Francisco. I interviewed him personally, but he did it just for me. He was not convinced he wants to be videotaped. That was 3 years ago. I do not want to bother him and ask again. There is a possibility someone else reached him recently and there is no need to agitate. Such update would resolve that question. I know of two more people like that in Menlo Park.

Jazz Party in the foothills

Good friend of mine, Stasio (Stan) Jarmulowicz, organizes on June 5 traditional Jazz Party on his estate located in Marysville area. On his behalf, I am inviting people, willing to camp there, already since Friday, June 3. One should bring a tent and some food and nicely spent time in the area, where nearby there are beautiful hills, a mountain creek to swim in, a winery, which can be visited on an organized tour, if we can gather in advance at least 30 people, and also there is a swimming pool on the property. Since up to 300 people can come, it makes sense to commute in groups.

It is an annual event to which very good jazz musician are invited. Charming personality of the host, a jazzman himself, and interesting guests create unforgettable atmosphere. This year, on June 5 starting at 11:00 am John Witala Trio will be performing, John Witala – bass, Leonard Thompson – piano, Diego Voglino – drums. As I was able to find out, it is not easy to get good musicians at convenient date and it comes at sizable cost. In order to take some financial burden off the host’s shoulders, I suggest donations, as much as one can afford. It will be a nice surprise to him.

Address: 6265 Stonehedge Drive, Marysville.
